As in other cities, taxis in Hong Kong are very convenient and inexpensive way of point-to-point traval throughout the city. There are three types of taxis: Red taxis operate in urban areas. For those who prefer a taxi instead of the MTR, most of rides will be on red taxis. They are available throughout Hong Kong (except the southern side of Lantau Island and Tung Chung Road). Green taxis operate in the New Territories (Tuen Mun, Tai Po, Yuen Long, North District, north of Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan). Blue taxis operate only on Lantau Island (except Discovery Bay). All taxis provide services to/from the Hong Kong International Airport.
Currently, the taxi park counts more than 18,000 vehicles, 15250 of which are red taxis, 50 blue taxis and others are green taxis. Almost all drivers are able to understand or speak a little in English, and know all popular hotels and tourist attractions in the city. But if you need to get to a specific place in the city, it's better to have a paper with a destination name and address in both English and Chinese.
